Does it really get harder to lose weight as we age?

When women start working with me, they often talk about gaining weight as they age and how much harder it is to lose weight than when they were younger. So, let's look at five reasons weight loss can become more challenging as we get older.

5 Reasons Why It Gets Harder to Lose Weight as We Age

1. Weight redistribution. As women go through menopause, where we store fat changes. Before menopause, women are more likely to store fat around their hips and thighs. During and after menopause, fat storage tends to shift towards the belly area, and visceral fat around our organs can also increase. This can happen even without a significant change in overall body weight.

2. We move less without realising it. As we age, we can gradually become less active in our daily lives. We’re more likely to take the escalators rather than the stairs and drive rather than walk.

3. Life gets busier and busier. We have more demands on our time, from raising children and caring for ageing parents to dealing with greater pressure at work. These demands can affect the time we have for ourselves, the food choices we make and the habits we develop.

4. Muscle loss. Muscle loss tends to increase as we age, especially if we don't exercise regularly. Although muscle mass has a relatively modest impact on the amount of energy our body uses each day, maintaining muscle supports insulin sensitivity, which plays an important role in metabolic health and can influence weight management.

5. Poorer sleep quality. Hormonal changes, life demands and our habits can interfere with how well we sleep as we age. Poor sleep can reduce insulin sensitivity, affect appetite and influence food choices, potentially contributing to weight gain.

There are many other factors too, but these five give you a picture of why weight gain can slowly creep up as we age. We are rarely affected by just one of these factors, which makes it easy to blame ageing alone rather than recognise the contributing factors that can build up over time.
